Our Resort

Snug Harbor has been a hidden gem in Mitchell Bay on San Juan Island since the early 60's. The resort has been a preferred location of outdoor enthusiast for decades. Fishing and crabbing in the immediate area has always been fantastic, easily reached from the protected harbor of Mitchell Bay.

Going back much further than the 60's, Mitchell Bay was a prime location for the Native American Indians indigenous to the area. The protected bay and proximity to areas offering easy harvesting of salmon, crab, clams, oysters, and seaweed made the location a natural gathering place. With the advent of whale research and eco-tourism Snug Harbor again became the preferred launching point for these endeavors. We currently host three whale research boats, two whale watching operations and a kayak touring company from our marina.

The resort was purchased in 2006 for redevelopment by a group of investors. Due to the economic down turn in 2008 this plan was never fulfilled. In 2011 Erik and Tamara Nelson acquired control of the resort and developed a plan to revitalize Snug Harbor. By 2014 all but one of the previous structures, built over the last 50 years, have been replaced with 16 one and two bedroom cabins and a new office and store. In 2012 we introduced Mitchell Bay Coffee and new for 2014 Snug Harbor is able to offer, for the first time, conference space for wedding receptions, corporate retreats, family reunions or other gatherings. Still to come in the next couple of years are four additional cabins and replacement of the docks in our marina.

Amenities

Each of our guests have access to a host of amenities. We offer free usage of four kayaks and paddle boards, two canoes and bicycles. There are also beachside fire pits stocked with wood for your nightly use. A beachside BBQ and two complimentary crab cookers are ready to help you prepare a scrumptious meal. Opening for the summer of 2016, is our newly-remodeled exercise room with an amazing waterfront view. In addition, free parking and free wifi are available throughout the resort. Snug Harbor Resort is already a great value, but when you add in our complimentary amenities, there is no one on the island that offers so much for so little.
